How to connect to a VPS over SSH

Connecting to your server over SSH from Windows, macOS, Linux and a phone: where to find the details, which commands to type and what to do after the first login.

What you need

Three things: the server's IP address, the login and the password. After payment the bot sends them, and they are in your dashboard on the website too.

SSH is an encrypted connection to the server's command line. Everything you type runs on the server, not on your computer.

Windows 10 and 11

Windows has an SSH client built in. Open PowerShell (Start → type “PowerShell”) and run this, with your own login and IP:

ssh login@IP-address

On the first connection Windows asks whether you trust the server: type yes. Then type the password; nothing shows while you type, which is normal.

If you prefer a program with windows, PuTTY or Termius work: put the IP in Host, port 22, then the login and password.

macOS and Linux

Open Terminal and run the same command:

ssh login@IP-address

Answer yes to the trust question and type the password.

From a phone

On Android and iPhone the free Termius app works: “New Host” → the server's IP as the address, the login and password → “Connect”.

For quick actions without a command line there is our bot: status, reboot and a new password in one tap.

What to do after the first login

  • Update the system (Ubuntu and Debian): apt update && apt upgrade -y
  • If the password was shown anywhere, change it with “New password” in the bot or with the passwd command.
  • To log in without a password, add your SSH key to ~/.ssh/authorized_keys. Leave our bot's key in that file: status, reboot and monitoring in the bot work through it.

If it does not connect

  • “Connection timed out”: the server is off or still being set up. Check the status in the bot; if it does not respond, press “Switch on / Not responding”.
  • “Permission denied”: wrong login or password. Check the details in your dashboard; after a password change in the bot the new one is there.
  • Running Windows Server? It is reached with Remote Desktop (RDP) on the same IP, not SSH.
